Room 237 vs Exodus @ Leeds West Indian Centre 17/10/07

Unrelenting leftfield music promoters Room 237 teamed up with Exodus to bring a night of futurist techno and dubstep to Leeds' West Indian Centre. Birmingham techno legend Surgeon topped a lineup with enough menace to give Leona Lewis fans all over Yorkshire the heebiejeebies: Mark Broom, Sleeparchive, Remarc, Vex’d and Pinch all made the trip out to Chapeltown.

Whenever Exodus step out in Leeds there's a big appetite for it, no exception here. Ruckspin, Exodus and Jack Sparrowhawk did the business early on, before Pinch and the guests. It was rammed all night and congested when busiest as only the back room door was open for smokers. While the soundsystem and overcrowding were sometimes restrictive, no one could complain about the quality of the music. Tough beats and versatile selections kept the heads nodding all night.

The main room was comfortably busy for Sleeparchive's eagerly anticipated set. His pristine minimal techno sound, awash with filtered noise and deep bass, has found him a place in the most discerning record boxes. Although his live show tonight provided an excellent build up, the presentation lacked the depth and nuance which earned his vinyl releases their acclaim.

Surgeon was next up, showing his worth with a 2 hour set which was much tighter than the sometimes aimless sets he has been known to play lately. His crisp, focussed beats were consistent and the flirtations with dubstep perfectly complemented his unique techno sound - streamlined and industrial. Mark Broom followed with another wicked mix, electro basslines and an IDM influence keeping the crowd energised.

P45 and Computer Controlled DJ's kicked it out for the last hour - no quarter asked for and none given. Everyone was happy at the end of a big night - Leeds knows its got it good with the Exodus and Room 237 crews.
